Do you know what sound corn makes…
when you’re in Amish Country, photographing it all by your lonesome with no one in sight?
It makes the sound of someone sneaking up behind you with a big stick, waiting to bring it down on the back of your head WATCH OUT!!! Just kidding. But not really, I was starting to get freaked out when I was walking through the corn fields.
There is SO MUCH CORN in Amish Country, and I have a feeling you’ll be seeing lots more corn photos as we head out west. I’ll try to keep it to a minimum. This is how Friday, September 5th went (actually, we start out with the night before):
Mark and I got in an argument while putting up the tent. I believe one of the lines went “OH YEAH WELL THIS IS THE TENT I’LL BE SLEEPING ALONE IN TONIGHT, KATIE!” But of course once the tent was put together, all anger caused by us not reading the directions and thinking we knew how to set it up without doing so had dissipated.
Mister waits patiently with Amish corn fields behind him. He’s been climbing up on tables and counters lately, it’s his new thing.
I get really scared while camping at night. It didn’t help that walnuts were falling off the trees all night, which of course also sounds like someone sneaking up to murder us….
The next morning I brought Mister with me to protect me in the corn fields. This alfalfa was up to his neck!

I’m starting a collection of photos featuring fabulous air brushed artwork on the back of RV’s and trailers.
Everyday we seem to get a really late start, it just takes so long to do anything! Like right now, it’s almost 12pm on Sunday, and I should be in Cleveland enjoying the unfamiliar city. But instead I’m writing this post a day late. In this photo we’re taking our time attempting to organize the Jeep which was a HUGE mess after only five days of traveling. The clean up was a success for about 5 hours.
While in Amish Country, all I wanted was to befriend an Amish family, eat dinner at their home, storytelling time (imagining that’s what they do instead of watching television) and then we’re pen pals for life. That did not happen. But this fella driving these horses, he gave me the thumbs up so that’s close enough. Maybe next time I’m there, I’ll actually talk to Amish people instead of accidentally blurting “Holy s***” and then taking their picture. Now that probably sounds terrible, so I’ll just let you know he couldn’t hear me anyway over the sound of gigantic trucks idling in the parking lot 5 feet from his corn fields.
None of this road trip is really planned when it comes to the itinerary. Of course we know sights and cities we’d like to see, but we want the option to be able to stay somewhere for as long as we’d like without feeling rushed to get to the next destination, or if we find some place not on the schedule we can take a day to explore. But that also means sometimes we’ll have no idea of what we should do. Since this road trip is new to me, I am lucky enough to be entertained by cows. I’m sure by the end of the journey I’ll be sick of cows.

Mark would never fit in here, what with his lack of beard growing abilities and all. He does have long eyelash growing ability.

It costs $14 to hop on this train and enjoy a delicious dinner while riding through the Amish countryside. What a deal!!! Unfortunately we thought we wouldn’t have time and did not take that deal up.

We were there for two days and saw hundreds of these cars driving around. Is this a convention? Or do they all just live in the area?
Yeah, most of these were taking while Mark was driving.

They were walking to a tree where they were going to eat a barefoot lunch. Barefoot! Adorable kids!
It was around this time that I asked Mark about that farm he found online where we would be able to milk cows, feed cows, pet baby animals, learn about corn and running a farm and all this other stuff. “Well, do you want to go there Katie? Then ask Samantha.” So I looked through the POI’s (points of interest) and found the farm. As she sometimes does, Samantha led us to the wrong place, but we did meet a nice Amish family where we ended up. They pointed us across the street to our destination, Verdant View Farm.
Mister was frightened by these cows. Two seconds later he was barking and the cow was actually afraid of him.
That’s when Ginny came out and told us if we just waited around for another 20 minutes or so we could get a tour of the farm. A TOUR WOO HOO!!! So we signed up and waited around for some other people to arrive.
Too busy keeping an eye on those cows to actually be angry at us for putting him in this tire.
And then I met Circles.
I named him Circles because he had circle patterns on his sides. We hung out with him for a bit. Mister screams like a woman when cats come around (not for any other animal, just cats) which caused Circles to bring the claws out as she leaped out of my hands. Now I have boo boos.
Look at this cutie! See that arrow pointing down her nose to her mouth? That means “FEED ME NOW”.
“Seriously, feed me. Now.”

And then it was bunny time!!!
Do you see how awesome this day is going?! Cows? Baby cows?! Kittens!!! BUNNIES!!!! Brain explosion. Circles was jealous he wasn’t getting any attention.

This is Ginny. She owns this farm with her husband Don. Don’s great-grandad bought the farm back in 1916. So of course Don grew up there. You can read about what Ginny is explaining over at the Daily Photo. Don and Ginny are awesome, they’re intelligent and made the farm tour much more interesting than I imagine other farmers could make it. They spent five years living in Brazil learning farming methods, which proves how cool they really are.

Clyde was hissing it up at Mister. Hissing doesn’t get through to Mister who was still quite interested in the pair. I hope we don’t come across any snakes while we’re on this road trip.

Oh here they are. Why it’s Kelly and Brett from channel 11!! (Said as though someone from Lancaster is reading this). They’re feeding Brown Sugar, one of the four goats on the farm.
Mark is feeding Bucky Bo. Bucky had an awesome hair do.
What a good looking donkey! This is Manuel, and we didn’t get a chance to pet him because apparently he’s a dangerous little man.
He’s into getting his back scratched by a dried up corn cob.
And then it was time for the turkeys and ducks. They used to have peacocks in there but the pen flipped over one to many times and those peacocks were thought to have been eaten by foxes (they found feathers in the woods).
All Mark wanted to do was pet that Turkey.

Mister ran towards their cage in a threatening manner while we were still in there. Those turkeys flapped their wings and freaked out. Way to go Mister, you jerk.
Thanks to new technology which allows them to cure the hay after it’s been shrink wrapped in plastic, the Rancks can fill both silos with feed instead of one feed, one hay.
Circles was following us while hiding from Mister.

Maybe you can’t see it here, but after an hour on the farm our feet were filthy.
Don explains to us what it took to build this wagon. It’s a pretty awesome wagon actually, and I would tell you the story but it’s kind of long. That’s why if you’re in the area you should probably visit Don and Ginny, they’ll tell you the story themselves. I will tell you this thing is hooked up, it’s got Christmas lights along the top, tables on the sides that flip up so you can eat dinner on the wagon, you can even plug in your coffee maker or microwave if you wanted.
Oh wow Don, that is so interesting.
Now I know what alfalfa looks like.
I’ve got to tell you about the corn
First of all, this is dent corn. Can you see the dents on each kernel? You know those strings that you choke on when you’re eating corn? Well each kernel gets one string, which acts as the umbilical cord for that kernel. The top of the string gets pollinated and then the kernels start forming. If you open the corn and you see that some kernels hadn’t developed yet (example above), then the pollination didn’t finish yet. EXTREMELY AWESOME FACT OF THE WEEK: My cousin told us if you use corn to make ethanol, then that corn that might have been used for animal feed or corn oil is no longer being used for those two anymore. Well that is wrong. One ear of corn can be used three times, first to make corn oil, and then ethanol, and then animal feed. Amazing!!!

A three week old cow sure acts like a pig when slurping down two bottles of milk in three minutes.
And now Don shows us how to cook popping corn on the cob. It took him 95 tries to find the perfect combination of bag + oil + cooking time + other random object to get it right. First of all, lots of butter. The more butter the better because it concentrates the heat on the kernel and pops it! Second, they had to find the right bag. These aren’t waxy bags, although they look it. And they don’t split open in the process. They tried tons of bags and oils. He said he even dipped the ear of corn in oil once to see if it worked. After buttering up the corn, stick it in the bag, fold the edge over once and place a mug full of five ice cubes and water on top of it. This keeps the corn from burning.
Once it’s finished you’ve got a bag full of two servings of popcorn and a hot cup of water, ready for tea.
Then we all pigged out.
Especially Mark.
The best tea of my life = fresh spearmint tea.
Popcorn on the cob. And a hair-do you’re really jealous of right now.
Circles didn’t Mister too much so he pretty much disappeared. Then Boogers came around and won our hearts. Boogers sneezed at one point, getting boogers all over himself and me.

And that’s the end of the day.
This first week has been pretty rough on Mark and I. We don’t have a place to sleep yet (that’s coming tomorrow) and we haven’t quite mastered the art of having a good time AND writing about it. We’ll have to find an in between spot. But this experience reminded me that no matter what we’ll always be able to find something awesome to do in the middle of no where. Right now we’re in Cleveland, which is the farthest West I’ve ever driven before. I’m pretty excited to see what happens as we travel even farther out West.

Way to slander ! That is not what I said regarding using corn for ethanol. Not that it takes away from animal feed, but that it takes away from humans. It’s contributing to the rising prices of food. The government is paying farms to allocate a certain portion of their crop that used to be for corn for humans and now turning it into ethanol. The US is the largest exporter of corn, and now that a chunk of the crop is being used for ethanol instead of food, it’s contributing to the world’s food shortage and rising prices of food.
